Natural Remedies for Sick Kids (So You Can Get Them Back to School!)

Alright.

I’ve got some bad news. We are literally in the first weeks of school and the sicknesses have started (any Parks and Recs fans in the house?). I can already hear the collective groan of all school aged moms out there!

“NO!”, you say. “Can’t be this soon!”, you say.

Sadly, it’s true. School is starting and the germs are already on the loose!  In my daughter’s preschool class, stomach bug and a fever are already making their way around the class.  Talking to moms at other schools, we are not the only ones.

I don’t know about you, but seeing my kids feeling their worst is one of my least favorite parts of parenthood.  Not to mention, it is so hard to have a kid (or kids) stay home unplanned. Work, appointments, prior obligations, or just because you LOVE the peace that comes with your child gone all day! All ruined due to a cold!

Here are a few of the remedies I use with my kids to get them up and running as quickly and naturally as possible.  Whether you are dealing with fevers, earaches, or stomach bugs, I’ve got something for ya!  Here are a few of the things we use when my kiddos get sick.

True Botanica Throat Defense

A good friend of mine shared some of this with me when a horrible sore throat threatened to knock me down for a couple days.  I started using this and it really helped!  It can be used everyday as daily immune support, or used as needed when the illnesses start coming on.  It’s just a 1/4 tsp melted on the tongue, and it tastes good, so they beg to have it. I use it with my kids and we all stay healthy and happy.

Peppermint Oil

When it comes to fevers, it is instinct to reach for the closest medicine to bring their fevers down.  But having a fever is actually the body’s way to fight off infection.  I don’t usually give medication for fever, but when my littles are a bit uncomfortable, I put some peppermint oil (diluted with a carrier oil) on their spine and back of neck to help cool them naturally.  I have also put it in the bath before, too.  That way, I allow their immune system to do the hard work while still keeping them comfortable.

Mulleins Garlic Oil

We don’t get ear infections often.  As a matter of fact, my oldest has had one, my middle had one, and my youngest has yet to have one.  And I think I can thank garlic oil.  Anytime an ear issues come up, we immedieatly put a drop or two in each ear, and in a day or two, all problems are resolved.  When my son had his first ear infection this year, it was a full blown infection, and we were able to get rid of it in 3 days (and keep him comfortable) with nothing but mulliens garlic oil and an ear sock for pain. It also works great for swimmer’s ear, too!

Honey Lemon Tea

Coughs suck!  Nothing pains me more than hearing a sweet little one with a wicked cough.  And there is no cough medicine for young kids, so I had to find another remedy.  This one works wonders.  Hot water, juice of half a lemon, and a teaspoon or so of honey is all it takes. A cup of this at bedtime helps them cough less, so they can sleep better (and you can sleep better)!

Digest-Zen

This essential oil blend is a life saver for my kiddos.  It is hard when they get a stomach ache because there is nothing I can do it make it better.  No pill, no ice pack, no food helps with stomach aches.  But I love feeling like I can offer them something when they don’t feel good.  A little roll of this on their stomachs helps them feel better and makes you feel good as a mom.

You don’t know when the germs will strike, but you can have all the tools to help your sick kiddos when it happens.

Tell me, what is your favorite go-to when you have a sick kiddo?
